Part Three: Sayulita!!

In April we are bringing a group of people for cooking classes, sightseeing, and plenty of swimming in the ocean and the pool at the casa. We still have some space if you’d like to join us.

Part 3
We decided to venture out of Bucerias to Sayulita, about 20 km north. Sayulita is a popular tourist destination that attracts surfers and young people.

A musician friend of mine who went to school with my daughters, Olivia de la Cruz, has opened a bar right off the beach in Sayulita. So, after enjoying another breakfast of chilaquiles, we walked around town looking for her bar, Lucid.

Unfortunately, Olivia was back in the states for a bit, so we missed her! But, we enjoyed the outdoor seating at her bar with a delicious, ice-cold mojito, rimmed with brown sugar, while we people watched.

Sayulita is a colorful place with festive, picado flags hanging from trees and over streets. There were signs on every street that read Amor or Love.

We wandered around town looking into stores and found an open-air shop displaying beautiful folk art made by the Huichol people. The Huichols are indigenous people from neighboring Jalisco, Durango, and Nayarit. The artwork they are most known for is a type of decoration made from beeswax or resin and colorful beads. Additionally, Huichol artists are known for yarn paintings, which are intricate and beautiful. We saw similar bead and yarn work throughout Nayarit and Jalisco, but most were trinkets created for tourist consumption. This little shop opened my eyes to the incredible artistry of the handicraft.

Within walking distance of Casa de la Reyna, the villa where we are staying, is an art walk. It is open on Thursday evenings during our scheduled free-time and would be a fantastic, optional activity.
